Laser Treatment for Nail Fungus (Onychomycosis)

Clear, healthy-looking nails take time. Results are not immediate, because the damaged portion must grow out and be replaced by new nail. Most clients begin to see a clear “grow-out” line at the base of the nail within a few months; fingernails typically need 3–6 months and toenails can take 6–12 months to fully grow in. Consistent home care is essential to prevent reinfection while the nail is growing.

How Does the Neo Work?

Our 1064-nm laser energy safely heats through the nail plate into the nail bed where fungi live. The goal is to create an environment that’s inhospitable to fungal organisms while keeping surrounding skin comfortable. A session is quick and well-tolerated—you’ll feel warmth under the nail—and there’s no downtime. Many clients benefit from a series of treatments spaced several weeks apart; your provider will recommend a plan based on nail thickness, number of nails involved, and duration of the infection.

What to Expect After Your Session

You can return to daily activities right away. Because nails grow slowly, improvements show gradually as new, clear nail emerges from the cuticle area. During this period, it’s critical to follow a preventive care regimen to reduce the chance of re-exposure from shoes, surfaces, or older polishes.

Preventive care regimen (to avoid reinfection)

  • Disinfect shoes: At the end of the day, spray inside your shoes with an antifungal spray and avoid wearing those shoes for 48 hours. For added protection, use SteriShoe® or similar ultraviolet shoe sanitizers to neutralize residual microbes.
  • Topicals: Apply an antifungal cream for 2 weeks following the procedure as directed by your provider to prevent toe fungus from returning.
  • Ongoing maintenance: After the first 2 weeks, spray feet or fingers with an antifungal spray regularly (for example, after workouts or before putting on socks/shoes).
  • Linens: Change your sheets the first night after each treatment and wash in hot water when possible.
  • Shower hygiene: Clean shower floors (home or gym) with a disinfectant such as diluted bleach before next use.
  • Tools & polish: Disinfect all nail instruments with an appropriate solution (or diluted bleach), and discard any previously used nail polish that may harbor organisms.
  • Public spaces: Wear sandals in public showers, pool areas, hotel bathrooms, and locker rooms. Avoid going barefoot on communal floors.
  • Footwear & habits: Keep nails trimmed and dry, change into clean, breathable socks daily, and rotate shoes so interiors fully dry between wears.

Key benefits

  • Deep Penetration: Effectively heats the nail unit—including the bed—where fungi reside.
  • Quick Recovery: No downtime; resume normal activities immediately.
  • Drug-Free Option: Helpful for clients who cannot take or prefer to avoid oral antifungal medications.
  • Targeted & Efficient: Treats only the affected nails and surrounding tissue.
  • Preventive Guidance: You leave with a clear, step-by-step plan to help avoid reinfection.

Who is a good candidate?

Laser therapy is appropriate for many clients with discoloration, thickening, brittleness, or separation consistent with nail fungus. If you have diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, neuropathy, are pregnant, or have open wounds around the nail, please discuss with your provider so we can coordinate care or adjust timing.

Maximizing your results

  • Commit to the series your provider recommends; single treatments are rarely sufficient.
  • Be consistent with home care—shoes, tools, and surfaces are the most common sources of reinfection.
  • Schedule follow-ups to monitor growth. Some clients choose a maintenance session several months later, especially if they return to high-risk environments (gyms, pools, communal showers)

Bottom line: Laser nail fungus treatments can meaningfully improve nail clarity and comfort when paired with a diligent home-care regimen. While the process requires patience as the nail grows out, most clients appreciate the non-invasive, no-downtime experience and the comprehensive prevention plan that keeps progress on track. If you’re ready to start, book a consultation so we can evaluate your nails and personalize your treatment series.
